Scenario: Laying a 2-inch sand bedding layer for a 16 ft by 12 ft patio base (192 sq ft) using coarse concrete sand with a 10% compaction buffer.

Calculate Surface Area: 16 ft × 12 ft = 192 sq ft.

Convert Depth to Feet: 2 inches ÷ 12 = 0.1667 ft.

Compute Net Volume: 192 sq ft × 0.1667 ft = 32 cubic feet.

Sand Volume & Weight Formula

Volume = Surface Area × Depth × (1 + Compaction Buffer %)

Surface area is calculated according to the selected geometry (Length × Width for rectangular bases, π × Radius² for round pools/sandboxes, or 0.5 × Base × Height for triangular areas). Multiplying surface area by sand layer depth yields the geometric uncompacted volume. A compaction and settling reserve (default 10%) is added to account for tamping and moisture settling.
