Step-by-Step Calculation Example
Scenario: Tiling a 6 ft × 8 ft bathroom floor with 12" × 24" porcelain tiles and 10% waste buffer in boxes of 8 tiles.
Calculate Floor Area: 8 ft × 6 ft = 48 sq ft.
Calculate Tile Area: (12 in × 24 in) ÷ 144 = 2.0 sq ft per tile.
Net Tile Count: 48 sq ft ÷ 2.0 sq ft = 24 tiles.
Add 10% Waste Factor: 24 × 1.10 = 26.4 -> 27 tiles.
Calculate Boxes: 27 tiles ÷ 8 tiles/box = 3.37 -> 4 boxes.
Tile Calculation Formula
Total Tiles = ⌈ (Surface Area ÷ Single Tile Area) × (1 + Waste %) ⌉ Surface area is determined in square feet (or square meters). Single tile area is calculated in matching units ([Length × Width] ÷ 144 for inches to sq ft). Dividing surface area by single tile area gives the exact tile count, to which cutting waste is added.
Formula Variables
Calculation Assumptions
- Grout joint spacing slightly reduces total tile count but is safely absorbed by the cutting waste buffer.
- Always purchase full cartons from the same manufacturer production dye lot for color consistency.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common homeowner and DIY questionsTile Calculator
How much tile waste should I calculate for herringbone?
Herringbone patterns require a minimum of 15% to 20% waste factor because every tile meeting a wall edge requires a 45-degree angled cut that frequently cannot be reused.
How do I calculate subway tile for a kitchen backsplash?
Standard subway tile is 3" × 6" (0.125 sq ft per tile). Measure backsplash height and width in inches, multiply for total square inches, divide by 144 for square feet, multiply by 8 tiles per square foot, and add 10% waste.
Why is buying from the same dye lot important?
Ceramic and porcelain tile glazes vary subtly between production batches (dye lots). Buying all required boxes plus spare tiles at once prevents noticeable color mismatches.
