Wall Area Calculator

Accurately calculating your paintable wall area is the essential first step before buying paint, ordering wallpaper, or hanging drywall. Our free Wall Area Calculator calculates total perimeter, gross wall surface area, and exact door and window deductions so you know the precise square footage or square meters of wall surface to cover.

Step-by-Step Calculation Example

Scenario: Calculating net paintable wall surface for a 14 ft × 12 ft room with 8 ft ceilings, 1 entry door (21 sq ft), and 2 standard windows (15 sq ft each).

01

Calculate Perimeter: 2 × (14 ft + 12 ft) = 2 × 26 ft = 52 linear feet.

02

Calculate Gross Wall Area: 52 ft × 8 ft = 416 sq ft.

03

Calculate Door Deductions: 1 door × 21 sq ft = 21 sq ft.

04

Calculate Window Deductions: 2 windows × 15 sq ft = 30 sq ft.

05

Calculate Total Deductions: 21 sq ft + 30 sq ft = 51 sq ft.

06

Subtract Deductions: 416 sq ft - 51 sq ft = 365 sq ft.

Result: Net paintable wall area is 365 sq ft (33.9 m²) out of 416 sq ft gross wall surface.

Paintable Wall Surface Formula

Paintable Area = [2 × (Length + Width) × Height] - (Doors × Door Area) - (Windows × Window Area)

Room perimeter is calculated by adding length and width and multiplying by 2. Multiplying perimeter by ceiling height yields gross wall area. Deductions for doors (default 21 sq ft / 1.95 m²) and windows (default 15 sq ft / 1.40 m²) are subtracted from gross wall area to obtain net paintable wall surface.

Formula Variables

P — Room Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width)
H — Wall / Ceiling Height
A_{gross} — Gross Wall Area = Perimeter × Wall Height
D_{doors} — Total Door Deductions = Doors × Door Area
D_{windows} — Total Window Deductions = Windows × Window Area
A_{net} — Paintable Wall Area = Gross Area - Total Deductions

Calculation Assumptions

  • Standard residential interior doors are approximately 3 ft × 7 ft (21 sq ft or 1.95 m²).
  • Standard residential interior windows are approximately 3 ft × 5 ft (15 sq ft or 1.40 m²).
  • Wall surfaces are assumed to be flat vertical planes with uniform ceiling height.
  • Closet openings or archways without doors can be customized using custom opening dimensions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common homeowner and DIY questionsWall Area Calculator

How do you calculate the wall area of a room?

Add the lengths of all four walls to find the perimeter, then multiply by the ceiling height to find gross wall area. Finally, subtract the area of any doors and windows to get the net paintable wall area.

Should I subtract windows and doors when buying paint or wallpaper?

Yes, subtracting doors and windows avoids buying excess paint or wallpaper. However, keep in mind that wallpaper often requires pattern matching waste, so keeping a 10% to 15% buffer above net wall area is recommended.

What is the standard square footage of an interior door and window?

A standard interior door (30" to 36" wide by 80" high) occupies approximately 20 to 21 square feet (1.86 to 1.95 m²). A typical residential window (36" wide by 60" high) occupies approximately 15 square feet (1.40 m²).

How do I calculate wall area for an L-shaped or irregular room?

Measure each straight wall segment individually and add them together to get the total perimeter. Then multiply the total perimeter by ceiling height and subtract door and window openings.

How do I measure wall square footage with vaulted or cathedral ceilings?

Divide the wall into a standard rectangle (width × height to the lowest eaves) plus a triangular gable on top (1/2 × width × gable peak height). Add the rectangular and triangular areas together.

How much paint does 400 square feet of wall area need?

One gallon of standard interior paint covers roughly 350 to 400 square feet with a single coat. For two coats on 400 sq ft, you will need approximately 2 gallons of paint.

How many drywall sheets do I need for my wall area?

A standard 4x8 drywall sheet covers 32 square feet. Divide your gross wall area (before minor deductions) by 32 and add a 10% cutting waste factor to determine total sheets required.
